asked Mr. Before.
“What’s that?”

Molly shook her head in disbelief.
“My God, I have to explain it to the teacher.”

Sitting in the middle of a bored classroom of students,
Molly continued:

“A metronome—
It’s a mechanical instrument,
used for timing music.”

“It swings back and forth,
at an even pace.”

“Click, Click, Click, Click,” she said.

“It never changes.
Just like you, Mr. Before.
Just like this class.”

“Oh, that’s very interesting,” said Mr. Before.
In a monotone voice,
faking interest.

Molly pulled a metronome from her backpack.
